Description

The Headrite Sports’ seminars (www.headritesports.com) are a showcase and forum to discuss and engage on the importance of heading in the game, and good practice for safe and repeatable training. Following on from three years of extensive research and development in the area of heading, the event will focus on the importance of heading in the modern game and the complex challenges the practice and usage of this skill faces in particular with underage players. This seminar will include insights into the skill, the leading thoughts in research and the experiences of our development partners in Douglas Hall AFC.

The agenda for the day includes:

  • Introduction to Headrite Sports
  • Importance of Heading in the modern game
  • Concussion in the game
  • Skills development and best practice
  • Chronic traumatic encephalopathy (CTE) a looming spectre
  • Douglas Hall’s experiences on HSL
  • Demonstration (Douglas Hall AFC)



Confirmed speakers for the day include:

Dr. Micheál Newell, Department of Medical Informatics & Medical Education at NUIG:

Dr Newell is a qualified Sports and Exercise Scientist with a Doctorate degree in Integrated Biology. His research interests include injury epidemiology and injury prevention, physiological performance and assessment in sports and exercise, as well as the development of dynamic, creative, and innovative learning strategies for medical education. In addition to lecturing in Medical Education, Dr Newell is the academic co-ordinator of the MIME postgraduate programmes and the postgraduate programmes in Sports and Exercise Medicine/Physiotherapy.

Mark Herrick, CEO Headrite Sports:

After completing early schooling in Ireland Mark moved to England at 16 years of age to pursue a career in football. Having spent four years in Britain playing for Peterborough United and Raith Rovers Mark returned to Ireland where he played both professionally and semi-professionally for 12 years whilst resuming academic career in University College Cork. A bachelor of Arts degree was followed with a Higher Diploma in education. He qualified as a secondary school teacher and taught in St Joseph’s College, Galway for 12 years. Mark is a registered scout for the FAI. He founded Headrite Sports in 2016.

Neal Horgan:

Neal played professional and semi-professional football for Cork City FC over a period of 15 years contributing to a successful period for the club which included League and Cup titles as well as playing in the Europa League and Champions League. A twice published author on the dramatic period of Cork City FC’s history, a regular contributor to the sports pages of the Irish Examiner and a practicing solicitor in Cork.

Kelvin Flanagan:

As a youth Kelvin played for a very successful St. Michael’s team in Tipperary, that won Munster youths. He represented Ireland at Junior level and went on to the U.S.A on a Soccer Scholarship and later played for Cork City. He has Won an FAI cup, League Cups, and Munster Senior Cups. Kelvin played over 14 times in Europe and scored in the old cup winners cup. He was nominated for FAI player of the year and was selected on the FAI team of the year. Has been Senior sales Manager for Kearys Motor Company since 1998. Kelvin is Head Coach in Douglas Hall AFC since 2006. He was manager of the U13 Premier team that won its first schoolboy league trophy in 16 years.




The seminar will be followed by a demonstration of the system by Douglas Hall AFC.

Delegates on the day are from across the spectrum of coaching and medical staff from youth academies, primary and post-primary education, private academies and League of Ireland. If your club has not received an invitation please register here (Note places are limited to two per club).
