Description

Sheehy Skeffington School 2019: Rediscovering Democracy and the Common Good: The Contribution of Human Rights

The 2019 Sheehy Skeffington School will evoke the Democratic Programme adopted by the First Dail of 1919 and its commitments to social and economic reform, its focus on the well-being of the most vulnerable and the preparation of its people for active citizenship through education, training and economic development along progressive cooperative lines.

In this era of resource accumulation by elites, the conversion of wealth into political capital, the perilous state of the planet as a result of climate breakdown and the trumping by loutish rage of democratic decision-making, the 2019 Sheehy Skeffington School will focus on how the democratic model can be reconfigured in a way that protects democracy itself and safeguards and expands human rights.

Our keynote address will be delivered by Michael O'Flaherty, Director of the EU Agency for Fundamental Rights with Susan McKay, Author and Journalist responding. Proceedings will be moderated by our long standing chair, Carol Coulter, Director of the Child Care Law Reporting Project.

This will be the last Sheehy Skeffington School and we hope that you can join us for what promises to be a stimulating and insightful evening.

After the School a reception will be held for all attending to mark our closing and to thank all our contributors and participants over the years.

The Sheehy Skeffington School and is named after the committed socialists and human rights activists Hanna and Frank Sheehy Skeffington. The school was formed in 2012 to provide a space for reflection on the formative years of the Irish revolutionary period. We are particularly conscious of the aspirations of the early revolutionaries; how they compare with the political, social and economic outcomes of the modern state and the importance of improving those outcomes to accord with fundamental human rights.
