Event description
Sheep Breeds WOOL Portraits | Kathy Ross

About this Event

Textile Artist, Kathy Ross, has created 12 portraits of Irish pedigree breeds of sheep, which will be exhibited at PRINTWORKS, Galway as part of the European Congress of Sheep Farming & Associated Traditions.

Each portrait incorporates needle felted wool shearings taken from each of the breeds. The completed portraits are made by layering needle felted sheep wool with hand and machine embroidery to create a hyper realistic representation of each subject. The work is highly original. By using shearings from individual breeds incorporated into the artwork the artist tells the story of each breed through its own portrait, creating an awareness of the importance of Irish sheep wool and the variety of wool and breeds in the country. Work began in May 2019, when the artist visited with the breeders and photographed the family of sheep, Ewe, Ram and Lambs.

Kathy produced drawings from the original photographs, used design techniques to apply these drawings to material and completed the beautiful stitching and embroidery on each unique piece.

Works will be online at PROJECT BAA BAA from the opening date and are for sale.
