Description

Phil Mac Giolla Bháin

Phil is an author, award-winning blogger, journalist and playwright based in Donegal. His first play Flight of the Earls premiered in the Balor Theatre, Donegal in 2005 and the work was then taken on a tour of West of Ireland venues in 2007.

In recent years, his work as a dramatist has been an important part of the St. Patrick’s festival in Glasgow. In 2015, his play Hame, which was based on a Glasgow Donegal family living through the tumult of the Scottish Independence referendum, brought critical acclaim.

His most recent work, Rebellion, premiered in 2016 at the St. Patrick’s festival in Glasgow. The play explored and connected the events of Easter Week and the revolutionary period with the experience of second-generation Irish people living in contemporary Glasgow. It was performed again this year in Webster’s Theatre, Glasgow, by the same production company, Sweet For Addicts.

Phil is also a working journalist and is the author of four non-fiction books.

He is an active member of the National Union of Journalists. In November 2016 he was voted the Best International Football Blog at the Football Blogging Awards for his work at
www.philmacgiollabhain.ie.

His debut novel, The Squad, was published in 2018 by Frontline Noir and was launched at the Dublin Writers’ Conference. He is currently co-chair of the Irish Writers’ Union.
