Would you like help developing your musical understanding and improving your sight-singing? This course is for you.

About this event

Are you a dedicated choir member with some previous fundamental experience of music notation and music theory, but who learns their line primarily by ear?

Join expert choral conductor and RIAM teacher Amy Ryan on this interactive, lively, and varied online course between May and June, which will use the Kodály concept to explore the following:

  • Understanding rhythm and metre
  • Pitching notes
  • Relative solfa
  • Tips and tricks to sight read with confidence

Learning Objectives

  • Demonstrate an understanding of simple and compound metres
  • Perform a range of simple rhythmic patterns with confidence
  • Recognise and understand basic score markings (tempo, dynamics, articulation)
  • Explore major key signatures up to 3 sharps and 3 flats
  • Sight-sing simple major key melodies from staff notation using relative solfa
  • Sight-sing simple minor-key melodies from staff notation using relative solfa
  • Recognise fixed pitches in the treble and bass clefs

When

6 Wednesday evenings from May 26th to June 30th from 6:00-7:30pm

About Amy Ryan

Amy Ryan studied at the Kodály Institute of the Liszt Academy of Music, Hungary, earning a Master’s degree and Advanced Diploma (distinction) in Music Education and Choral Conducting respectively, studying under Peter Erdei and Dr. László Nemes. During her time at the Institute, she worked as teaching assistant and was awarded the “red diploma” for academic excellence.

Amy currently lectures in Music at Trinity College, Dublin and at the Royal Irish Academy of Music. She is in demand as a conductor and workshop facilitator, directing the UCD Philharmonic Choir, Jubilate Choir, award-winning chamber choir, Cuore, and the Irish-language ladies choir, Cór Duibhlinne. Amy is Chairperson of the Kodály Society of Ireland.

Requirements

Ability:

  • Some previous experience of reading from musical notation: understanding of simple metres, simple rhythm patterns in 2/4, 3/4 and 4/4, the treble clef and major key signatures with up to two sharps and flats

  • 18+
