Description

Time and Date: 09:00, Thursday 31st October 2019

Meeting Point: Nassau Street (Opposite Coffee Angel)

The Dublin Waste-to-Energy project is a Public Private Partnership (PPP) between Dublin City Council (acting on behalf of the four Dublin Local Authorities) and Covanta, a world leader in providing sustainable waste and energy solutions, to provide a sustainable treatment of waste that cannot be reused or recycled. The plant processes at least 600,000 tonnes of waste per year and generates 60MW of electricity to power 80,000 homes.

Covanta have invited IMechE & Mechanical & Manufacturing Division members on a site-visit to the Dublin Waste to Energy Plant. During the site visit, attendees will be given a 20 minute presentation about the plant’s operation and the technologies used. Attendees will then be taken on guided tours around the plant in small groups to view: the control room, waste processing, boiler and steam turbine, and the processing of the exhaust gases. The tour will then finish with a questions and answers session.

The site-visit will commence at 10:00 (bus collection at 09:00) and take approximately 1.5-2 hours. Attendees will be dropped back in to the pick-up location after the tour.

Attendees are required to wear appropriate clothing for an industrial site: Trousers or jeans must be worn. Safety Boots are preferred but sensible closed toe footwear at a minimum.

PPE – hi-vis jacket, hard-hat, safety glasses & gloves will be provided on site. The tour involves climbing stairs so if anyone wishing to attend has any mobility issues please inform the organiser in advance.

There is no charge for this site-visit.
