Event description
Launch of the Irish in Aotearoa New Zealand Report" of the Irish Community, part of the inaugural "Small Nations, Big Ideas Summer School"

About this Event

Ambassador Peter Ryan and Mrs Teresa Ryan invite you to join them for an historic event as we officially launch the "Irish in Aotearoa: Mapping the Irish Community and People of Irish Heritage in New Zealand" report.

With a foreword from President Michael D Higgins, the report was written by Dr Sonja Tiernan of the Centre for Irish and Scottish Studies at the University of Otago and is the first detailed study of the Irish Community in contemporary New Zealand. It’s findings will inform and facilitate the work of the Embassy over the coming years as we work to build ever closer links with the many Friends of Ireland in Aotearoa, including those who trace their family links to Ireland.

Our unique gathering in Parliament, facilitated by the Speaker, Right Hon Trevor Mallard MP, is part of the programme of the inaugural "Small Nations, Big Ideas Summer School". Taking place as democracy and human rights face unprecedented challenges across the world, and as Ireland begins a two year membership term of the Security Council of the United Nations, the Summer School is intended to encourage, support and facilitate reflection, dialogue and debate on how Ireland and New Zealand’s shared values, experience and knowledge can be put to best effect.

No Irish event would be complete without traditional music and we are delighted to be joined by some wonderful musicians for what will be a most memorable evening.

Places are limited and we recommend early registration - if you wish to bring a family member, friend or colleague, you will need to ensure their name is registered for access to Parliament.
