Description
Computer Science is too important to be left up to boys, geeks and nerds! The lack of female participation in Computer Science is a global phenomenon. Although the reasons for this are complex there is a consenus that a lack of understanding of what computing involves, a lack of visibilty of female role models and a perception of computer science being for "geeks" and "nerds" contribute to the problem.
CodePlus is an initiative of the Trinity Access 21 (TA21) project in Trinity College Dublin. CodePlus seeks to address the issue of underrepresentation by providing support to schools to learn more about careers in computing, One aspect of what we do is to provide talks from female developers, engineers and professionals to girls in Irish secondary schools.
On the 3rd of May 2018 we are running an event in the Science Gallery Dublin for Transition Year and 5th Year girls where a panel of professional speakers from the industry will provide a number of talks on their career experience to inspire and enthuse students. The event is also a great opportunity to visit Trinity College and the Science Gallery! This event is run with the support of the Hypatia Project http://www.expecteverything.eu/hypatia/ and the Science Foundation Ireland's SmartFutures programme http://www.sfi.ie/engagement/smart-futures/
Tickets are free but limited. Light refreshments provided after the event. School bookings limited to 15 tickets per chaperoning teacher (contact grace@bridge21.ie if more needed)
