Event description

Description

What is it? Practical training on how to run and deliver socially-inclusive public engagement activities in science, targeted at children from socio-economically disadvantaged backgrounds including children from migrant/refugee backgrounds.

Who can attend? Anyone with an interest in science communication, public engagement and minorities. You do not need to have extensive experience in science communication, public engaggement and/or working with children. Beginners welcome!

Who delivers it? Expert science communicator Johanna Strahlhofer from Vienna University Children’s Office. Johanna’s team has been developing special techniques and strategies to empower children from these minorities in participating in science for the last 10 years. Learn more about what a Children's University is with the following video.

Can you tell me more about the workshop? This science communication workshop is based on the long-term experience of the project “Children’s University on Tour”, which is a flagship-project in terms of social inclusion in both Austria and across Europe. Within this project, scientific activities are embedded directly within the surroundings of socio-economically deprived groups which could be public parks, youth centres, or other locations.

A low-threshold approach with special techniques and strategies has been developed by Johanna and her team at the KinderBuro, aiming to empower the children to take use of their competencies, enabling them to participate in the scientific process and to meet the interests and needs of this target group. Some of these strategies include the use of hands on-experiments (natural, social and cultural science disciplines) and the creation of further adequate methods.

How can I practice what I learned during the workshop? Participants will be offered the possibility to implement the learning from the workshop at a public engagement event on the 6th of April. This will be a direct application of their workshop experience.

These workshops are supported by a NUI Galway Equality, Diversity & Inclusion project grant.

The project is run by Cell EXPLORERS in collaboration with Vienna University Children’s Office, NUI Galway University of Sanctuary group, Galway City Partnership and Cúram.
