Event description

Description

At SPAB we believe in a hands-on training approach to protecting Ireland’s unique built heritage. The Working Party is a chance to have a go at conservation practices for historic masonry buildings, working alongside a community of like-minded people during the day and enjoying the festivities together in the evenings.

The working party unites construction trades and professionals, historic property owners, students and anyone interested in learning more about conservation, maintenance, ecological and archaeological considerations for historic buildings.

Where and when is it taking place?

This year’s Working Party is taking place at An Cabhail Mhór, a 16th century plantation fort ruin in Killinaboy, Co. Clare from August 17-19th.

Participants can come for one day or stay the whole weekend, with free camping available on site. Friday and Saturday will be practical workshops where participants can learn hands-on skills like hot mixed lime preparation and usage for re-pointing and structural repairs, as well as maintenance and alternative wall capping techniques. There will be a public open day on Sunday 19th August, with interactive demonstrations from traditional craftspeople and talks from local history groups.

On Friday evening there'll be a bus tour of local heritage sites and dinner in a local restaurant locally (dinner not included in costs below). On Saturday evening there'll be a BBQ, music and storytelling on site.

How much does it cost?

Non-SPAB members: €25 per day (Friday or Saturday), or €40 for the full weekend.

SPAB Members: €15 per day (Friday or Saturday) or €25 for the full weekend.

Sunday’s public open day is free of charge.
