Speaker Biographies

Bernard Looney is responsible for the Upstream segment which consists of exploration, development and production. Bernard joined BP in 1991 as a drilling engineer, working in the North Sea, Vietnam and the Gulf of Mexico. In 2005 he became senior vice president for BP Alaska before becoming head of the group chief executive’s office in 2007. In 2009 he became the managing director of BP’s North Sea business in the UK and Norway. He became executive vice president, developments, in October 2010, and in February 2013 became chief operating officer, production, serving in the role until April 2016.

Bernard is a Fellow of the Royal Academy of Engineering, a Member of the Stanford University Graduate School of Business Advisory Council, and a Member of the Society of Petroleum Engineers Industry Advisory Council. He is also a Fellow of the Energy Institute.

Rory Dunphy is the Regional Manager for CNOOC Nexen in Ireland. Rory received undergraduate and postgraduate degrees in Geology from Trinity College Dublin and subsequently, having worked briefly for the Petroleum Affairs Division and the Geological Survey Ireland, he emigrated to Canada in 2004 where he began his career in the oil industry.

After two years with a specialist consultancy he joined Nexen in Calgary in 2006. Unconventional plays have been the primary focus of his career to date and building on early technical roles he became one of the key leaders responsible for establishing a shale gas business within Nexen. Since the CNOOC acquisition of Nexen in 2012, his experience broadened to encompass everything from running remote HPHT drilling operations to advising on major LNG projects. Prior to taking up his current role he was an Exploration & Appraisal Manager with responsibility for one of the most prolific shale gas plays in the world.

In 2017 Rory returned to Ireland to establish an in country office for CNOOC Nexen in support of exploration efforts on acreage acquired in the 2015 Irish Atlantic Margin licencing rounds. Rory currently chairs the Environmental Committees for both Ireland Offshore Operators Association and the Petroleum Infrastructure Programme. He is member of the American Association of Petroleum Geologists, the Society of Petroleum Engineers and is registered as a professional geologist with the Association Professional Engineers and Geoscientists of Alberta. A duel Irish-Canadian citizen, Rory is on the board of the Ireland Canada Business Association.
