The tour and movie are about former Spike Island resident PERCY FAWCETT, who became world famous in the early 20th century as an explorer and adventurer. He would provide the inspiration for INDIANA JONES and the Arthur Conan Doyle book, THE LOST WORLD. The movie stars the Hollywood stars CHARLIE HUNNAM, ROBERT PATTINSON and SIENNA MILLER and was produced by BRAD PITT'S production company. It has received universal acclaim and has an 89% rating on Rotten Tomatoes to date following its U.S release.
PERCY FAWCETT lived on the island from 1903 - 1906, having already led a life less ordinary as a spy in North Africa and an officer in the artillery Corps in Sri Lanka. He would speak fondly of his time on the island in his future book, exploration Fawcett, and his second son was born on the Island. In 1906 he had his first oppoutunity to go to SOUTH AMERICA and brave the unexplored jungles and hostile natives on his first surveying mission. This would spark on obsession in Fawcett that would see him return again and again over the next 19 years, as he searched for THE LOST CITY OF GOLD, or EL DORADO as it was known. Fawcett returned again and again convinced that there was a lost city just waiting to be found, as happened with Machu Pichu in 1912, and his obession would eventually claim his life. He went missing in the jungle in 1925 while on expedition with his eldest son Jack and Jack's school friend, never to be seen again.
Several rescue expeditions were sent and over 100 people were also lost in the jungle attempting to discover his fate. As late as the 1980's people TV crews and expeditions still trying to solve the mystery of what happend to one of the most famous characters of the 20th century, but to no avail. He was as enigmatic in death as he was in life.
