Event description
One man’s quest to study the most elusive of river residents, the brightly-coloured kingfisher.

About this event

In partnership with National Botanic Gardens

One man’s quest to study the most elusive of river residents, the brightly-coloured kingfisher. Writing with hallucinatory clarity and singular powers of observation, he brings the beauty and mystery of the animal kingdom to light.

Join Dublin Book Festival for an afternoon with critically acclaimed writer Declan Murphy as he discusses his latest book Spirit of the River with seasoned travel and culture writer Manchán Magan.

Following a remarkable encounter with a kingfisher as a young boy, Murphy returns to the river for an in-depth investigation into the habits and secrets of this elusive bird during its nesting season. Rather than purely an exercise in search of knowledge, this venture into nature is a means for the author to manage the world around him, providing balance, solace and direction. 'As I study the birds, animals and plants around me, I cannot help but see the patterns all living things seem driven to create.' As we join the author on his journey in search of the kingfisher, he is forced to confront how he sees the world and ultimately experiences the power of nature to restore balance. The author invites readers to explore everything from the search for harmony and knowledge, to mythography and the acute awareness of people’s fragility.
