Understanding Guided Reading in the Classroom

Guided Reading is a strategy used to teach children how to be balanced readers. Guided Reading sessions involve a teacher working with a group of children focusing on identified objectives to be taught through the course of a twenty minute session. Children are usually grouped by matching them to levelled texts.

This session will focus on matching children to text and organising for Guided Reading.

We will cover the following:
• Teaching strategies for reading : Modelled and Shared Reading, Guided Reading Independent Reading
• Guided and independent strategies to support and extend student learning.
• The Guided Reading process
• Guided Reading within the Literacy Block
• Guided Reading book levels
• Planning and Programming for Guided Reading
• Error analysis: Meaning Structure, Visual


Speaker: Stephen Graham

Stephen Graham is a Professional Development Literacy Consultant working with Cengage Learning in Australia.

Having completed a Master’s Degree in Children’s Literacy, Reading Recovery Training and a Deputy Principal role, Stephen understands the issues confronting today’s educators. His wealth of varied experience in education also led to his appointment as Literacy Consultant for the NSW Department of Education and Training. Originally from Enniskillen, Co. Fermanagh, Stephen is a truly inspirational presenter who is passionate about improving the learning outcomes for students.
