Event description

Description

Organised as part of National Heritage Week 2017, this event is a free talk by Dr DavidSorensen, on the unique industrial heritage that made Balbriggan famous.

A variety of textile mills, factories, and a thriving cottage industry were central to the life of the town for several centuries and many of the town's inhabitants and their ancestors worked in them. One of the factories, Smyth & Co., established in 1780 focused its production on high-quality hosiery. The merit of Balbriggan's stockings and hose became renowned worldwide with customers from the ranks of European royalty and nobility, such as the Empress of Austria, the Tsarina of Russia and none other than Queen Victoria herself.
