Event description

Description

This seminar will examine how innovative practices in Student Orientation can improve outcomes for incoming students.

It is intended as a practical session involving the sharing of best practice among Orientation coordinators in HEIs in Ireland. It is aimed at staff from academic and professional service departments involved in the delivery or support of Orientation programmes. It would also be suitable for Students Union officers. Key areas of focus are:

  • The use of apps, online materials and interactive websites to assist in delivering the orientation programme
  • The use of extended Orientations to enhance the learning that takes place during orientations, and to combat information over-load.
  • Effective pre-arrival communications
  • Use of Orientation as a student engagement vehicle for senior students (Peer Mentors / Student Ambassadors)
  • The value of engaging with parents of incoming students during Orientations
  • Use of interactive learning activities to avoid “death by powerpoint” or “talking heads syndrome” during Orientations
  • Addressing the engagement pillar – community-based or employer-led activities during Orientation.
  • Effective use of social media during pre-arrival and Orientation process

The keynote will be delivered by Professor Michelle Morgan, from Bournemouth University, who is a specialist in student transition and student experience, and editor of "Improving the Student Experience: A practical guide for universities and colleges"

A light lunch will be provided.

This seminar has been supported by the National Forum for the Enhancement of Teaching and Learning in Higher Education.
