Supporting Adults with Intellectual Disabilities in Bereavement & Loss

This workshop focuses on the impact of bereavement and additional losses for individuals with Intellectual Disabilities through an exploration of the relevant psychological models. We will look at the past and current understandings of grief and loss and how these have evolved over time; the unique ways in which grief can present for such individual while acknowledging the universality of loss.

Attendees will learn practical ways they can support the person during this process as well as signs that the individual is struggling to cope. Attendees will also be invited to reflect on their own experiences of loss and how these may interact or colour the ways in which they support others.

Learning Outcomes

On completion of the workshop participants will be able to:

• describe the psychological models of grief

• identify how grief can present in adults with Intellectual Disabilities and neurodevelopmental conditions

• discuss what barriers to grieving can emerge

• identify practical resources to explain death and dying

Presenter Profile

Dr John Smyth is a Senior Clinical Psychologist working in a Voluntary body which supports individuals with Intellectual Disabilities in south Dublin. He is also an Associate Consultant for AT Autism, a UK based Consultancy firm who provide training and supports for all things Autism. Prior to this he worked across Ireland and the UK in both public and private practice. He was a Specialist Clinical Psychologist in the NHS and previously director of Rós Buí Therapy and Training. A former member of the Psychology Society of Ireland’s governing council, John's interests lie in the areas of ID, Autism, Trauma and human rights-based approaches to care / support. In 2018 he was awarded the Early Career Award by the Division of Clinical Psychology Northern Ireland for his contribution to the profession within the region
