About this event

Who should attend

The seminar is open to all but may be particularly relevant to staff working in higher education, further education, second level education and the community sector; particularly those working in access, strategy planning, recruitment and finance. It may also be of interest to anyone who wishes to use the DIS data to support funding applications.

Seminar Summary

Supporting educational participation and social inclusion in disadvantaged communities is a key priority for many organisations. High-quality data can help us to understand changes in the profile and needs of communities and provide an evidence base to influence policy in this area.

A new approach, which has gathered this high-quality data, is the Deprivation Index Score information. This approach utilises data from the Census small area profiles and the Pobal Deprivation Index data to provide a more refined and targeted understanding of socio-economic disadvantage.

Understanding and utilising this data can assist organisations to highlight areas of disadvantage, implement targeted approaches and support communities where it is needed most.

This seminar will provide an introduction to this DIS data, including and how to access and use the data, an overview of key findings from the data to date, and how the resource can be used in a variety of contexts. The seminar will also support attendees to be able to use the DIS data to inform their own work. It will also include a workshop section where attendees can discuss, share and reflect on the practical relevance of the data to their area of work.

Speakers include:

Caitriona Ryan, Head of Access Policy, HEA

Janice Lau, Senior Statistics Manager, HEA
