Event description

Description

In Ireland, cancer occurring during childhood is cured in about 80% of children. Great advances in medical science and excellent clinical care have produced this positive result. However, the treatments that provide the cure for cancer can also damage healthy organs. These late effects of treatment can occur many years after the treatment is complete, and even well into adulthood. Late effects may not affect every survivor, but for some, they can be serious, when, for instance, the heart is damaged, or a secondary cancer arises.

For adult survivors of childhood cancer, Ireland does not have an established survivorship programme. This means that if late effects occur after childhood cancer, there is often no central coordination of their care. The National Cancer Strategy 2017-2026 has recognised this gap, and highlights survivorship as an important priority for cancer care in Ireland going forward.

CanCare4Living, the national organisation for survivors of childhood and adolescent cancer and their families - together with the National Cancer Control Programme (NCCP) and Boyne Research Institute, the are joining forces to put on a conference, to highlight the need for long-term coordinated services for survivors of childhood and adolescent cancer.

CanCare4Living invites survivors of childhood and adolescent cancer, their families and friends, health care professionals, researchers and advocacy groups to join us in the historic setting of Dublin Castle for this public meeting.

Our guest speaker is Dr. Heleen van der Pal, from the Princess Maxima Centre for Childhood Cancer in Utrecht, Netherlands. Dr. van der Pal runs the Late Effects Clinic in this new Children’s Hospital, and will bring us news of best practice in Europe.

The Conference is followed by a FREE complimentary tour of Dublin Castle.
