Technological torture or treatment? The need for compassionate leadership in healthcare
A public lecture by Professor Hugh Montgomery MB BS BSc FRCP MD FRGS FRSB FRI FFICM
Western Healthcare is in crisis, driven by an expanding burden of the aged with multiple co-morbidities, but compounded by unrealistic expectations from the public in the creation of which doctors have been complicit. Our planet also faces an environmental crisis which will affect the health of all. Now is the time for leadership- not to tweak the existing system, but to radically transform how our societies promote the wellbeing of their citizens.
Professor Hugh Montgomery
Hugh obtained a first class BSc in Cardiorespiratory Physiology and Neuropharmacology in 1984, before graduating from the Middlesex Hospital Medical School in 1987. He is accredited in General Internal Medicine, Cardiology and Intensive Care Medicine, and now practices as a consultant in Intensive Care Medicine in North London. He obtained his higher research degree from University of London in 1987, and is now Professor of Intensive Care Medicine at UCL, where he directs the UCL Centre for Human Health and Performance. He described the first 'gene for human fitness' and has since published >300 scientific papers, two in 'Nature'.
