Event description

Description

The modern day player trying to perform the contested high catch must possess three main qualities.

  1. Reading the flight of the ball
This is possibly the hardest skill to coach and acquire. Why? The relationship that a player needs to have with team-mates is a complex and yet critical one. Establishing the flight of the ball quickly gives the catching player an advantage on an opponent, who is not typically making the play but reacting to it. This advantage allows the marking player to get into a superior marking position earlier.
  2. Body positioning/strength
The feet, legs and arms play an important part in contested marking.
  3. Clean hands
You want to release both hands from the contest. This will give you the greatest chance of catching the ball.

THE AIM OF THE COURSE IS TO PROVIDE COACHES WITH IDEAS FOR IMPROVING CATCHING SKILLS THROUGH FUNCTIONAL TRAINING

  • Identify how skills can be broken down into Head hands & Feet
  • Explain jumping the arc
  • Emphasize good timing
  • Demonstrate judging the flight of the ball.
  • Explain the concept of hanging
  • Plan progressive practices/drills to improve performance.
