Event description

Description

Sixty years ago, in the Year of the Dog 1958, China launched the Second Five Year Plan with the ambition of equalling Britain’s industrial output, doubling steel production, and applying industrial approaches to agriculture. Favourable weather produced a good harvest that summer, but with labourers diverted to back-yard steel furnaces, crops were unfortunately left to rot in the fields or devoured by pests. This marked the beginning of the largest famine in human history. In this lecture, Dr Jackson will examine the origins and consequences of this most ambitious project, and China’s remarkable progress in recent decades.
