Event description
UCD BioSoc awards Dr. Beth Shapiro with the George Sigerson Award for her inspiring and thought-provoking work on how to undo extinction.

About this Event

Beth Shapiro is an evolutionary molecular biologist whose work focuses on the analysis of ancient DNA, specifically of a mammoth. With the sequencing of the mammoth genome she focuses on the topic of resurrecting extinct animals. This has become especially important in recent times with the increasing rate of extinction in animal relationship between the environment and the evolution of species, especially how climate change has increased the rate of extinction of animals. She has been awarded many accolades, such as the MacArthur Fellowship (aka the "genius grant" and a Royal Society University Research Fellowship. We found Beth and her work to be immensely inspiring, though-provoking and relevant to the times. For this reason, we have chosen her as the recipient of the George Sigerson Award for 2019.
