The Business Picnic - 19th July 2017

You’re invited... Summer 2017 sees the return of one of South East Ireland’s most innovative free business networking events called the “Business Picnic” on Wednesday 19th July 2017 in the Arboretum, Home and Garden Heaven, Leighlinbridge, Co. Carlow

This event is free and open to business owners and their key staff across Ireland and gives the opportunity to connect and gain knowledge from one another in a semi-formal networking environment. This year the event is brought to you by Carlow County Council’s Local Enterprise Office in partnership with Arboretum and Netwatch who will present to you a panel event with local, national and international contributors hosted by Anton Savage with comedian Karl Spain.

The invite is open to all business people and their key staff.

The event if free of charge and includes refreshments on arrival by the award winning team at Arboretum - Registration is Essential

Your Presenter - Anton Savage

Anton has advised clients ranging from Cabinet Ministers, the CEO’s and Chairmen of some of Ireland’s largest PLC’s through to members of the Catholic Heirarchy and CEO’s of global charities.

Anton has lectured in NUIG, Smurfit Business School and The Irish Defence Forces Command and Staff School.

He has been a columnist with Sunday Independent. Freelance contributor to the Irish Independent, Irish Daily Mail, Irish Mail on Sunday, and The Herald and has contributed to Today with Pat Kenny, the Marian Finucane Show, the Dave Fanning Show, Primetime, Ireland AM, Seoige, Tonight with Vincent Browne, The Last Word and The Ian Dempsey Breakfast Show.

He has been stand-in presenter on The Tubridy Show, The Last Word, TV3’s Ireland AM and The Seven O’Clock Show. He presented The Sunday Business Show, Savage Sunday and The Anton Savage Show on Today FM and The Apprentice, You’re fired! on TV3.

He currently writes a weekly column for The Herald.


Karl Spain has been in stand-up comedy for over fifteen years.

Karl is probably best known in Ireland for his TV series Karl Spain Wants A Woman, which was a huge success in that he not only got huge ratings but he also found himself a woman. In 2009 he filmed Karl Spain Wants to Rock but did not get a woman from that show. Apart from his own series he has also performed stand up on television all over the world – the U.S, the Middle East, Australia and even as far away as England. He has also appeared on Liffey Laughs, The Late Late Show, The Panel, Tubridy Tonight, The Afternoon Show and The Offside Show.

Karl was recently team captain on Don’t Quote Me for RTÉ Radio 1, which was recorded live at the Project Arts Centre and hosted by Sean Hughes.

As well as being a regular performer at Kilkenny Cat Laughs, the Galway Comedy Festival, the Vodafone Comedy Festival, the Edinburgh Fringe Festival and Montreal Just for Laughs. He has toured Australia as well as the U.S. and South Africa. He has toured with Kevin Bridges and Ed Byrne.

He regularly does corporate gigs and spends all his money on sweets and comics.

2015 saw the premiere of his first pantomime, Freezin’: The Story of The Snow Queen which he co-wrote with fellow comic Al Porter. The pair also co-wrote a short film for Sky one as part of the Irish shorts series. Karl is a resident writer for Republic of Telly and for countless other comedians

Roisin Hogan.

People are excited by the unique & well balanced nutritional profile and the ultra low calorie content. The meals range from 100 calories to 236 calories for 400 gram portions, making them the lowest calorie meals available on the market. Samatha Kelly

She is passionate about teaching businesses how to leverage social media effectively and add real value to their business. She is a dynamic and engaging speaker and trainer, and has been sought after to deliver training courses to many businesses including Hewlett Packard, HSE and the Irish League of Credit Unions.

Samantha is the founder of Social Media Summit Ireland. This is an annual conference which brought together leading Social Media Professionals, both nation and international, to highlight the importance of incorporating social media into your marketing strategy and demonstrating how it can add real value to your business in terms of revenue and business growth.

Samantha is also the co-founder of the Women’s Inspire Network, a support network which connects and empowers female led businesses. Originally an online support network, Women’s Inspire Network now hosts bi-annual national conferences for female entrepreneurs and female led businesses.

Barry Doyle CEO & Co-Owner at Arboretum Home and Garden Heaven

Barry is the CEO and Co-Owner at Arboretum, a dynamic family run business founded over 40 years ago. Arboretum has two stores, one in Leighlinbridge, Co Carlow & a new store in Kilquade, Co Wicklow. Commitment to excellence in customer service, store design and continuous innovation has earned the Arboretum the coveted title of Garden Centre of the Year 2017, National Company of the Year 2016 and National Store of the Year 2015 by Retail Excellence. Barry serves on the board of Carlow Chamber of Commerce and his strengths lie in strategic business thinking with a focus on customer service and store layout.

Barry studied Horticulture at the National Botanic Gardens in Glasnevin. He is married to Lynda; he has three children and lives in Co Carlow.

Patrick McCormack, Managing Director, Sam McCauley Pharmacy Group

Patrick was born and educated in Wexford and qualified as a pharmacist in 1988 from Trinity College, Dublin. He is the third generation of his family to become a pharmacist.

He has worked in USA , the UK and Iraq before joining Sam McCauley Pharmacy Group in 1991as a pharmacist. He has the distinction of being held as a “human shield“ by the Saddam Hussein Iraqi regime during the first gulf war in 1990 “

The Sam McCauley Group commenced expansion in 1994 at which point he became a shareholder. He holds a Diploma in Applied Finance from IMI and is a board member of Retail Excellence Ireland, the largest retail organisation in Ireland.

He was appointed Joint CEO of the Sam McCauley Group in 2003 and Managing Director in 2007

The Sam McCauley Chemist Group has grown from 2 stores with €3m turnover in 1994 to 30 stores under his stewardship and will annualise at almost €80 million turnover this year. The group recently agreed a private equity investment for a majority shareholding with Carlyle Cardinal Ireland.

After almost 26 years with The Sam McCauley Group Patrick has decided to leave and look at other opportunities .
