Dundalk Institute of Technology (DkIT) are hosting an important one day conference entitled ‘The Changing Landscape of Domestic Abuse – a Multiagency Perspective’ at the DkIT campus on Tuesday 29th October 2019. The aim of the conference is to reflect on the changes in the area of Domestic Abuse nationally, contextualise the current situation and look at the future provision of services. It will also promote DkIT as a centre of excellence for education in the area of Domestic Abuse as it has been offering the first accredited level 8 programme in Ireland in relation to Domestic Abuse since 2016 - ‘Certificate in the Fundamentals of Understanding and Responding to Domestic Abuse’,-midwifery-and-early years/certificate-in-the-fundamentals-of-understanding-and-responding-to-domestic-abuse.html

The conference will showcase the ongoing partnership between DkIT and the multiagencies involved in the development and delivery of this programme. Conference speakers will include graduates from the DkIT programme who will outline how it impacted on their practice. Detective Superintendent Gerry Murphy will discuss the role of An Garda Síochána in implementing the law in the area of Domestic Abuse. Emma Murphy will highlight her own journey and advocacy role in Domestic Abuse. Dr. Kevin McKenna will deliver a session on trauma informed care. Dr. Bethany Waterhouse Bradley and Dr. Susan Lagdon will co-present findings from a study undertaken on a Northern Ireland policing response to intimate partner violence. Dr. Geraldine O’Connor will present the findings of an evaluation of the Domestic Abuse programme delivered at DkIT. Deirdre Fahy, a graduate of the DkIT programme, will provide an overview of a systematic review she undertook on intimate partner violence. The conference will conclude with a multiagency panel of guests, with expertise in the area of Domestic Abuse, engaging in a question and answer session and reflecting on the learning from the conference.
