The Evacuation and Occupation of Victoria Barracks 18th May 1922.
A hundred years ago, on the 18th May 1922 The British Army evacuated Victoria Barracks (now Collins Barracks) in Cork and it was occupied by members of Cork No.1 Brigade of the IRA.
This was a defining moment in the history of Cork as it marked the end of the British occupation of the Cork city. This exhibition and talk tells the story of Victoria Barracks and some famous soldiers who were based there.
The event also covers the historic events leading up to its evacuation and occupation in May 1922 and the aftermath that saw it destroyed in the Civil War and rebuilt in the years before the Second World War.
