The Hamiltons, whose family had originally come from Scotland, were brought up in Hamwood, their ancestral home, just outside Dunboyne, Co. Meath. The fifth generation to live there was a family of 10 children, six girls and four boys. Of the six girls only one was to marry, and the remaining five, that included the artists Eva (1876- 1960) and Letitia (1878-1964) Hamilton were to live and work together for much of their lives. This presentation charts the journey through the seven different houses they lived in during a period of intense political, social and economic change in Ireland, from the end of British rule to the establishment of a newly independent Saorstat and beyond. Following a career in the food industry, Stephen Odlum embarked on a programme of further education in fine art. Following a series of courses through IPAV on fine and decorative arts, he completed a M.A. in Design History and Material Culture in N.C.A.D in 2013. He also graduated with a MPhil. in the History of Irish Art from Trinity College, Dublin in 2018, writing his dissertation on the life and works of Letitia Hamilton.
