The Hon Mr Justice David Barniville, President of the High Court
Called to the Bar in July 1990, he received his patent of precedence and was called to the Inner Bar in 2006. He was called to the Bar of England and Wales in 2016. He was Chair of the Bar Council between 2014 and 2016 and is a Bencher of the Kings Inns and Middle Temple.
His successful career in civil and commercial litigation, and international arbitration, over 27 years, led to his appointment as judge of the High Court in 2017 and he was the designated arbitration judge from June 2018, the judge in charge of the Strategic Infrastructure List in the High Court in 2018-2019, and judge in charge of the Commercial List as of 2020. He was appointed to the Court of Appeal in 2021 and in was appointed President of the High Court in July 2022.
In July 2018, he was appointed as a member of Ireland’s National Group on the Permanent Court of Arbitration in The Hague. He is a member of the Board of Trustees of the Academy of European Law (ERA) and of the Board of Trustees of BAILII (the British and Irish Legal Information Institute). He served as the President of the Association of Judges of Ireland (2019-2021) and is Senior Vice Chair of the Judges Forum of the Judges Forum of the International Bar Association (IBA).
Prior to his appointment to the bench of the High Court, he serves as Chairperson of Irish Rule of Law International (IRLI) from 2015. He is an Honorary Member of the Advisory Council of Arbitration Ireland
