About this event
If these walls could dance…. Welcome to 'the kip'! Welcome to an eclectic and eccentric kind of disco where the noises aren't quite so clean. Welcome to the intersection of angular indie and electro post-punk. Inspired by New Orders The Hacienda, Erol Alkan's Trash and any disco that has had the gall to play Daft Punk to the rock kids. Welcome to the latest and greatest clash between guitars and dance music. See you at 'the kip'!
'the kip' is the latest event from 2FM DJ, Graham Smyth who brings his love of post-punk and electro to the dancefloor with DJ & Live sets from some of the most interesting artists and record collectors in the scene. This edition welcomes DJ sets from 5-piece post-punk act, Silverbacks, the solo electronic punk project of visual artist and musician, Michelle Doyle called Rising Damp , as well as Graham Smyth.
Silverbacks are a 5 piece band from Dublin. Taking their cues from the taut rhythms and urgent drive of late 70s punk and the discordant, unpredictable freak outs of NYC nowave, they craft a signature sound spiked with triple guitar riffs, a motorik rhythm section and on the pulse lyrics. They released the follow up to their Choice Music Prize Nominated debut album, ‘Fad’ in January of 2022. ‘Archive Material’ captures the absurd mixture of monotony and creeping disquiet experienced by many of us over the past two years.
Rising Damp is the solo project of Dublin based visual artist and musician, Michelle Doyle. Originally a bass player in punk band Sissy, Damp expanded her practice to include drum machines, synths and spoken word. Rising Damp’s latest LP, ‘Petrol Factory’ Explores surveillance, brutal policing, modernism and mechanophilia, It is a passage through EBM, post punk and goth.
Graham Smyth is a Broadcaster and DJ who you can catch both on-air and at your local club or national festival. The presenter of an indie dance show on Ireland’s RTÉ 2FM on Bank Holiday Sundays and an alternative music show on Ireland's RTÉ 2XM every Thursday, Graham also regularly covers the midweek specialist music shows on RTÉ 2FM and has a particular love for bringing guitar-influenced sounds to the dancefloor!
