Event description

Description

Following the public pardon of Myles Joyce by President Higgins in April 2018, the infamous Maamtrasna murder case of 1882 has found the spotlight once again. This case – notorious for its failure to provide interpretation and translation services for monoglot Irish speakers – demonstrates the ramifications of translation and language-use on defendants, victims and prosecutors alike. Mr Justice Peter Kelly will lead a conversation with Margaret Kelleher, author of The Maamtrasna Murders: Language, Life and Death in Nineteenth-century Ireland (UCD Press, 2018), Dr Niamh Howlin, who provided an expert report on the Maamtrasna case, leading to the pardon of Myles Joyce, and Johnny Joyce, descendant of the family involved. This will be a fascinating, unique event, taking place on the anniversary of Myles Joyce's sentencing in the very venue in which it happened.
