Event description

Description

Music for Wexford proudly presents a recital of music by Arvo Pärt, performed by the Musici Ireland Ensemble

Programme

Arvo Pärt is an Estonian composer of classical and religious music who is known for his minimalist style that employs a self-invented compositional technique tintinnabuli - 'like the ringing of bells'. Pärt has recieved substantial recognition and awards for his music, including 13 honorary doctorates and 11 grammy nominations.

This concert opens with Pärt's 1977 composition Fratres, which is comprised of three parts which explore variations on a theme that combines both frantic activity and sublime stillness. It is followed by the gently rocking muted harmonies of Summa - originally a choral setting of the Credo later arranged for strings by Pärt. Es sang vor langen Jahren (1984) was written for composer and theorist Diether de la Motte. In this piece the violin and viola weave a rhythm suggestive of the tedium of the pining lover and evokes themes of both loneliness and nostalgia. The concert concludes with Pärt's setting of the Stabat Mater sequence which employs the use of two trios: one of voices (soprano, alto, and tenor) and one of strings (violin, viola, and cello). These trios are used by Pärt to highlight the contrast in the text of the Stabat Mater - the simultaneous existence of immeasurable pain and the potential of consolation.
