Event description

Description

A programme bringing new and old together, where the past speaks to the present through the hands of acclaimed Irish pianist Máire Carroll. Ravel’s Ondine from Gaspard de la Nuit depicts water nymph Undine luring the observer to the depths of her watery home. The nuances in the writing nod to an earlier work, Jeux d’eau; the program then arrives at the more recent past with Salvatore Sciarrino’s De La Nuit - a modern companion to Ondine, alongside Anaformosi where Sciarrino has taken Ravel’s Jeux d’eau as a point of departure and turned it into something hilariously different.

The slow movement of Schubert’s last piano sonata, in B flat, forms the subject of Garrett Sholdice’s Tanka for Aki Takahashi, with the work’s form inspired by the Japanese tanka poetic tradition. The programme concludes with Morton Feldman’s Palais de Mari, his last solo piano offering, and a piece that connects to the transcendent plane that typifies both Feldman and Schubert’s late music. Journey with Kirkos throughout the centuries, as the past and present converse in this poignant programme of solo piano works in the newly refurbished Bewley’s Theatre.
