The Potential of Gene Editing in Irish Agriculture
Date and time
The EU Commission are seeking your views on the use of new technologies in plants (food). UCC are hosting a free one day information event
About this event
You are most likely aware that the EU Commission are seeking our views on the use of new technologies in plants (food) (public consultation phase is open from now until July 22nd 2022). The use of new technologies in this area is relevant to all of us as consumers (we all eat plant-based food). This technology is also very relevant for Irish farmers, breeders, researchers, and as the EU states ‘ other economic operators in the agri-food chain’. There are massive implications for Irish growers in terms of access to crops that can withstand disease and are tolerant to other stresses including drought, heat etc.. There are enormous potential benefits to Irish agriculture with this technology particularly in the face of climate change and under the rules in place as part of the EU Green Deal (Farm to Fork Strategy) where there has to be a 50 % reduction in chemical pesticide use by 2030.
I would like to invite you to our free one day symposium on June 23rd in Boole 2, UCC where this topic and how it relates to plant - food production in Ireland will be discussed. We have a number of Irish and international speakers lined up. There will be plenty of opportunity for a full and frank discussion on the topic where we will be encouraging full audience participation. We will have farmers who work at the coalface outlining their views on this technology. The EU consultation phase will close a full month after our symposium (July 22nd 2022). Our event on June 23rd in Boole 2, UCC, affords us an opportunity to engage with farmers, consumers, researchers, in advance of giving our feedback to the EU Commission. I hope you can join us for what promises to be an exciting and informative event.
