Event description
Kenmare-based composer and researcher, JJ Riordan, uses sound and visual media to explore the history of the Kenmare Butter Market site.

About this event

JJ Riordan is one of Ireland's leading practitioners of Found Sound composition - a practice wherein everyday sounds are used in a variety of musical ways. Amassing over 14 million plays, views and streams across a variety of social media platforms, JJ is about to bring his found sound composition to a live setting, in his first installation - The Site.

Using multiple sounds acquired from a number of locations and similar sites, JJ will re-trace the history of the Kenmare Butter Market, from its roots as an open-air butter market, to the Silver Slipper Ballroom, Hallissey's Cash and Carry and to its current iteration, as an arts exhibition centre. The soundscape is presented alongside a projected visual display and light design.

This performance is presented as an element of JJ's PhD Arts Practice, at the Irish World Academy of Music and Dance, at the University of Limerick, where he is supervised by Prof. Mel Mercier.
