The Six Marys A comedy written by Jean Farrell and performed by Jean Farrell and Catherine Gallagher

About this event

THE SIX MARYS has been greatly enjoyed by audiences, in 100 theatres, all over Ireland. The play is a comical yet poignant look at life from childhood, in Ireland, in the 1950s to the present day. It is written and narrated by Jean Farrell, with supporting actress/singer Catherine Gallagher.

The play tells the story of six girls christened Mary. Excerpts from diaries are interspersed with songs and soundtracks from the different eras. The audience is brought on a journey depicting the social history of the times: the comics, the catechism and the stork; the nuns, the processions and the gym slips; the hops, the hopes and the ‘big day’; the babies, the teenagers and reality. This journey of self-discovery is laced with one-liners guaranteed to make you laugh!

A truly joyous and wryly subversive show, Jean Farrell has tapped into some universal truths here that resonate far beyond Catholic Ireland. This is Father Ted from a female perspective, and, like that much-loved sitcom, manages to find the warmth in some chilling corners of living under the thumb of the church. Most importantly, The Six Marys is very, very funny which may explain seven full houses in The Whale Theatre. Ross McParland Director of The Whale Theatre, Greystones, Dublin.

All events or shows will be filmed or photographed. Buying a ticket affirms your consent to the filming, sound recording or photographing of yourself as a member of the audience. Photography and recordings are strictly forbidden without permission of the Listowel Writers' Week Literary Festival Management.
