Event description
The state and individual liberty; When is it appropriate for government to interfere in the lives of citizens?

About this Event

Join Free Speech Ireland, Students for Liberty, the Edmund Burke Institute and the UCC Government and Politics Society for a discussion followed by an audience Q&A.

The state and individual liberty; When is it appropriate for government to interfere in the lives of citizens? What is the role of government in society?

Does a powerful state inevitably lead to a loss in individual freedom?

In a time where we increasingly hear calls for hate speech laws, safe spaces on university campuses and the censoring of certain opinions, is the government becoming too powerful? Should it really be telling us what we can and cannot say or think?

Why should the government prevent smokers from smoking in bars and restaurants? Is it a trade-off between individual liberty and the collective good?

Panellists on the night are;

Sarah Ryan - Former Fíanna Fáil Councillor and host of the 'Unsafe Space' podcast on Gript Media.

Professor Gerard Casey - Emeritus Professor of Philosophy at University College Dublin and Mises Institute Scholar.

Eolan Ryng - Sinn Féin local area representative, trade unionist and community activist.
