Description

Hen’s Teeth, Junior Press and and Night Hare are excited to present The Sunless Garden, a pop-up concept restaurant taking place on 21st October in our store on Fade Street.

Guests will enjoy a 12-course dinner, prepared by Richard Lewis of the Night Hare and Jamie Allan (UK) in the surrounds of a fictitious faded Italian restaurant, The Sunless Garden.

The Sunless Garden, once a leading light of the gastronomic scene, has faded since its golden days. With notions of grandeur driving it, The Sunless Garden is always aiming to reclaim its top spot on Dublin’s fine-dining circuit. Hen’s Teeth will be transformed into the dining room of this fictitious eatery, a space which was once seen as the most romantic place to take your beloved for dinner. It is where our fictitious couple had their first date. Guests will experience the arc of their relationship through the food they’re served, and the artwork, lighting and music surrounding them. As the courses progress, these elements will subtly change around diners, to reflect the different relationship phases through which they’re travelling.

Included in the ticket price of € 95 is 12 courses, a cocktail, and a special, limited-edition zine created for the event by the team at Junior Press.

On the subject of the zine, George Voronov of Junior Press said: “The Sunless Garden is a photographic love story – except it isn’t. Rather than documenting events in a coherent plot, it is a compendium of experiences, visualisations of emotion – a scrapbook of the mind. The sun always seems to burn brighter during in the jittery euphoria of courtship, while heartbreak casts everything in grey. The Sunless Garden is a photographic experiment exploring what happens when you form a new story by re-organising your memories.”

Speaking about the concept, Greg Spring, director of Hen’s Teeth said: “We've wanted to do something with food since moving in to the space, but we wanted to have theatre, that's where Junior come in.”

Ellius Grace of Junior Press said: “We have always wanted to shake up the idea of the gallery/ magazine/ book launch with Junior. We always try and make an event that is engaging for the audience, and we think this collaboration with This Greedy Pig will be our most adventurous yet. Venturing into the realm of gourmet and almost theatrical level dining has been really exciting, and we can't wait to see how this experience changes the way people interact with the zine we are making. The zine itself (which will be given to each ticket-holder for the event) is also our most experimental. It is a collection of disparate works which tell the story of a relationship. We are creating atmosphere and emotion through every aspect of the zine's making and design, and can't wait to share it with everyone who comes down to The Sunless Garden.”

Speaking about the menu, Rich Lewis said: “It’s a collection of culinary emotions and memories, from desperate singledom to blissful contentment, reflecting moments of clarity and heartache at home and abroad. The collaboration is a fascinating marriage of two mediums usually reserved for other kinds of visual art or perhaps music. I'm particularly interested to see how the diners receive the dishes, if they can draw any parallels with the images, or it evokes something untold in them.”

About Rich Lewis

Originally from Wales, Rich Lewis found food and drink following a short music career. After studying in London, he quickly found himself working and then running the Charles Lamb Public House in Islington, learning the ins and outs of the Gastropub trade from the front and back of house. After six years of service he moved to Hill and Szrok butchers and Cookshop in East London to nourish a growing interest in natural and low-intervention wine and grilled high-quality meat. During this time, he also started running his own pop-up restaurants, which eventually led to his current circumstance In Dublin with Night Hare – a monthly dinner concept looking for a full-time home.
