Themed guided tour: Brigid's Day History, Mystery, and Magic
Event Information
About this event
Traditionally, 1 February is the first day of spring in Ireland. Now often known as St Brigid’s Day, this celebration has deeper roots in the ancient festival of Imbolc.
In the Celtic calendar, Imbolc landed about halfway between the winter solstice and the spring equinox. It was one of four significant cross-quarters (days halfway between a solstice and an equinox) - the others being Bealtaine, Lughnasadh, and Samhain (better known as Halloween).
Imbolc is a time when fertility returns to the earth and the barren winter landscape begins to change. In the Gardens, we note the first stirrings of spring. On this tour, we will explore some of the fascinating folklore surrounding this festival and similar spring traditions from other parts of the world, all while breathing in the fresh growth of the Gardens.
Please note that for now the glasshouses remain closed to the public, so our tours will take place outdoors.
