Event description

Description

The PRIMERA research team (Centre for Mental Health and Community Research, Maynooth University Department of Psychology) and the HSE Mental Health Division are delighted to host an interactive Masterclass with Dr. Adrian Falkov, a world renowned expert in working with families where a parent has mental health difficulties. The event will be opened by David Walsh, HSE National Director for Community Operations.

About PRIMERA

PRIMERA (Promoting Research and Innovation in Mental hEAlth seRvices for children and fAmilies) has been funded by the HSE Mental Health Division for 3.5 years: (1) to help develop, implement and evaluate family-focused interventions for families when a parent has mental health difficulties (and has children aged 0-18 years); and (2) to promote a ‘think family’ care delivery agenda in mental health (and other) services in Ireland. Many commentators (e.g. Barnardos, 2014) have highlighted that these families often do not receive the supports they need, whilst this is also reflected in the international literature.

To date, 9 sites across the country have been identified as eligible for inclusion in the PRIMERA research programme and have agreed to take part. These include seven sites that have agreed to deliver a family-focused intervention called Family Talk. The remaining two sites will deliver programmes that are already in preparation, including systemic family therapy and a group multi-family programme. All services will be evaluated by the PRIMERA research team, but with a particular focus on Family Talk.

About the Masterclass

Dr Falkov is a senior staff specialist in child, youth, and family psychiatry at the Royal North Shore Hospital in Sydney, Australia. His Family Model approach supports greater collaboration between services to improve partnership working between patients, families, carers, and clinicians. Adrian has worked in mental health policy, service development and evaluation, and has advised the implementation of think family approaches on this issue in Northern Ireland, UK, Norway and Finland.

Topics covered in the Masterclass include:

  • The importance of partnership working in mental health services and interagency collaboration

  • Advice on overcoming barriers/resistance to family-focused practice when a parent has mental health difficulties

  • Guidance about where family-focused practice and policy in the Republic of Ireland should focus its efforts based on experiences in other countries.

  • How to best identify and engage families to the intervention

  • Working with families in sessions

  • The involvement of service-users (with experience of family mental illness).

Who is the Masterclass aimed at?

  • Service providers involved in the implementation and delivery of a family-focused intervention as part of the PRIMERA evaluation

  • Anyone with an interest in promoting a 'think family' care delivery agenda for this population in Ireland (service providers, service users, decision makers, other relevant stakeholders)
