About this Event

In light of the recent events in the United States, this talk will examine the role of politics, constitutional authority and the power of language in relation to Thomas Jefferson's presidency.

Politics and the Presidency: Jefferson's politics, his victory in the election of 1800 and the role of Congress in the election.

Presidential Power: Jefferson, the Louisiana Purchase and the Constitution.

The Power of Language in the Presidency: Before he was president, Jefferson authored the Declaration of Independence in 1776. He was also a slave owner. Hear how he reconciled the two.

This talk will be delivered online via Zoom.
