About this event

Are you a Grantmaker new to the role, interested in doing a refresher course on Grantmaking or a Trustee of Grantmaking Programmes? Then this workshop on Designing a Grant Programme is for you!

This 3 hour online interactive training session will be led by Emma Beeston, leading facilitator in grantmaking with input from Emma Lane Spollen on grantmaking practices.

The objectives of the session include:

  • Planning an effective and efficient Grant Programme
  • Demonstrating principles of responsible grantmaking
  • Describing and evaluating a range of financial interventions
  • Defining and communicating objectives and priorities of your grant programme
  • Compare, contrast and adopt a range of application procedures
  • Analyse, justify and adopt a robust set of selection criteria

With break out sessions and training material including practical examples, templates, checklists and references for additional reading.

Emma Beeston

Emma has worked in the UK charity sector for over 25 including managing grant making programmes for BBC Children in Need and Lloyds Bank Foundation. Now as a consultant, Emma advises grant-makers and families on creating and implementing giving strategies. Emma co-created the Advising Donors module for the University of Kent’s Masters in Philanthropic Giving, lectures on CASS Business School’s Charity Masters Programme and delivers training for the Association of Charitable Foundation’s Professional Development programme. She is a co-founder of a giving circle, Bath Women’s Fund.

Emma Lane Spollen

Emma has spent 18 years working on social change in Ireland, deepening her understanding of how the system works. She has direct experience working within NGO's, Foundations, Government departments and Statutory Agencies. Emma places a strong focus on addressing the root causes of problems.

Emma has spent much of her career in lead roles in grant-making trusts and foundations in Ireland, with particular knowledge of family led foundations. She held the position of CEO of Tomar Trust, with prior roles as Advisor to the Tony Ryan Trust and as Deputy CEO and Portfolio Adviser of the One Foundation, Ireland’s largest limited life foundation.

Working on areas of public policy, Emma has provided Interim Management support to Tusla, the Child and Family Agency, and worked on a range of projects for the Center for Effective Services including the National Policy Framework for Children and Young People.

Emma is a qualified management accountant with a post grad in implementation science.
