DAY 1 - Research Methodology – “The Cunning Plan”

09:00 – 11:00

Session 1: A good foundation: the basics covered

Two core aspects of trials will be covered in some detail:

  • Choosing the right question
  • Trial design

This session will include an interactive quiz and involvement from the audience. The Smiley Faces task will be used to explore the issues that can arise in trials if good planning does not take place. Audience participation will aid the learning and keep discussions relevant to the trainees.

11:30 – 13:00

Session 2: SWATS – creating the evidence

The under-pinning elements of SWATs and SWARs will be explained, showing examples, the repository and potential impact of the collective knowledge of those engaged in trials. This will be followed by a workshop style group activity where people will go through the process to construct their own SWATs/SWARs, again keeping the training relevant.

13:00 – 14:00 Lunch Break

14:00 – 16:00

Session 3: New and developing research methodological aspect

A series of short presentations (with discussions) on a range of methodological aspects emerging, for example, but not limited to:

  • System approaches such as network analysis
  • Mapping
  • Agent-based modelling
  • Simulation approaches

DAY 2 – Trials in practise – “I love it when a plan comes together”

10:00 – 12:00

Sesion1: Trials in practise – lessons learned

A series of presentations and personal experiences from a range people and areas involved in trials, from Nursing to Education to Public Health, from PIs to the researchers and students involved. This would be followed by Q&A session to allow attendees to obtain further and relevant information and also a vignette of a trial, to explore the practicalities, barriers and potential solutions.

12:00 – 13:00 Lunch Break

14:00 – 16:00

Session 2: PPI – not just a tick box

Experiences from patients and academics involved in trials to illustrate the added benefit, both to the trial and to the patient of being involved and imputing into the research. This would be in the form of a town hall style discussion, with questions from the floor.
