TURBANTE-SE - THE ART OF HEAD WRAPPING - ONLINE WORKSHOP (in English)
Event Information
About this Event
Explore the art of head wrapping with Brazilian artist-designer Thais Muniz, founder of Turbante-se. Sharing her research of the ancestral history of head wraps and turbans, she traces their cultural and spiritual roots from Ancient Africa to contemporary Afro-Brazilian society and the communities of the Afro-Atlantic diaspora.
With the objective of decolonizing the mythology surrounding headwraps and turbans, Thais cites Yoruba culture, the Candomblé religion, the Orishas and the Baianas as the key to unlocking the extremely significant and deep-rooted meanings behind each head wrap and turban and their relevant contexts.
Starting with a short lecture discussing aesthetics, politics, art, empowerment, and the important figures responsible for handing down this legacy, you will then have the opportunity to explore more than 10 different styles of head wraps and turbans.
To take part all you will need is:
- A rectangular scarf with the measurements of 180-50 cm. You can choose your favourite print from a beautiful collection of head wraps Turbante-se. See pics below and write the name of your favourite on checkout notes with your address.
