Under Surveillance, film screening and panel discussion on Direct Provision
Date and time
‘Under Surveillance’ film screening and panel discussion on Direct provision system in Ireland.
About this event
‘Under Surveillance’ is a 30-minute film, performed by 8 residents from the Wicklow Grand Hotel, Direct Provision Centre and actors Kevin Olohan and Steve Hartland. This is the second project workshopped with the residents and writer Tina Noonan, following on from a stage production of ‘The Linen Room’, which was performed as part of The Abbey Theatre’s 5 x 5 in 2020.
‘Under Surveillance’ consists of 10 short scenes covering a 24 hour period, centred around the entrance to the hotel and set during the first Covid lockdown. We see the transient flow of residents, camaraderie, homesickness, boredom and the mental anguish of awaiting a fate of asylum or deportation with strangers who become family.
A short panel discussion will follow with the performers and the writer Tina Noonan, facilitated by author and writer, Siofra O’Donovan who has experience working with and teaching refugees abroad and in Ireland. Recent Ukrainian residents will also have an opportunity to take part in the post screening discussion.
