Event description

Description

Uses of Enchantment is a 3 Walls Gallery site-specific exhibition rooted in the theme of childhood and memories. The title is inspired by Bruno Bettelheim’s book ‘Uses of Enchantment, The Meaning and Importance of Fairy Tales’ (Thames and Hudson 1976), in which he explores traditional fairytales from a Freudian perspective.

‘The delight we experience when we allow ourselves to respond to a fairy tale, the enchantment we feel, comes not from the psychological meaning of the tale (although this contributes to it) but from its literary qualities-the tale itself as a work of art. A child... who has learned from fairy stories to believe that what at first seemed a repulsive, threatening figure can magically change into a most helpful friend is ready to believe that a strange child whom he meets and fears may also be changed from a menace into a desirable companion.’ Bruno Bettelheim

This is a concept based show, the gallery is also a home and living space. Artists were asked to consider domestic spaces within the gallery as potential sites for their work or concepts. Suggested sites: under the table, the fireplace, the fridge, the bathroom
