USOM Presents GUITAR NIGHT LIVE Ep 18: Mike Nielsen
Event Information
About this Event
Guitar Night Live is a livestream guitar interview show with special guests hosted by Ultimate School of Music. Some of the world's top professional guitarists across all genres will be on the show, interviewed by USOM director Daniel Jacobson.
This is a chance to hear these players talk openly and informally about how they got into guitar, and what got them to where they are now on their guitar playing journey. You will also see and hear them demonstrate their favourite techniques and practice methods.
You can even pick their brains by joining in and asking questions!
Each guest will be announced one week before the show.
The idea for Guitar Night Live came about when we at USOM were thinking about what we could be doing for the large guitar community in Ireland, including our own students. While the webinar will be free to all, the guest will choose whether we'll share their paypal link for donations to go straight to them, or the school's patron fund if they prefer. A lot of these great artists have lost a huge portion of their income due to gig cancellations.
Guitar Night Live will be free to participate in (you will need to download the Zoom app and have an internet connection).
Episode 18 of Guitar Night Live features Mike Nielsen: "Perhaps the most truly original voice in Irish jazz" (Sunday Tribune)
Mike Nielsen is one of Ireland's most advanced and intriguing guitarists. He started playing ukulele at the age of 4 and was gigging with bands by the time he was 12. He studied at Berklee, sometimes practicing up to 11 hours a day. He plays jazz but with a classical fingerstyle technique.
As a performer he's played with many leading international jazz artists, most notably Dave Liebman (who was a member of Miles Davis' 1970s band), with whom he recorded twice, and toured Europe, Australia, and New Zealand
His most recent album "Microtonal Sound Recipes" was in the Irish Times' Top 5 Jazz Albums of 2020.
The interviewer, Daniel Jacobson, was a student of Mike himself for many years, and had a big influence on him musically.
Catch them talking about everything from harmony, to technique, to Mike's new fretless guitar, to fingernails!
And of course as always, join in and ask questions :)
