Event description

Description

VATeir, the Irish vACC of VATSIM, would like to invite you to its annual fly-in on Saturday the 26th of August 2017. This year’s event will take place in the Cloud Suite of the Carlton Hotel, Dublin Airport, from 10am until 5pm.

What

The fly-in is an opportunity to meet VATeir controllers, to understand what it is like behind the scope, and to experience what it is like in a virtual control centre for the day.

Even if you can’t physically make it, VATeir’s controllers will be providing a full ATC service in Ireland throughout the day, so all VATSIM pilots will get the benefit of nationwide ATC coverage.

Where

The Carlton Hotel’s Cloud Suite is a conference room at the top of the hotel with a panoramic view of the final approaches to runways 28 and 34. Last year, we set up real-world ATC audio and ACARS data feeds in the room which allowed attendees to keep track of the real-life departures and arrivals while also controlling and flying on VATSIM.

The Carlton Hotel runs a free-of-charge shuttle bus from the airport to the hotel and back. The journey takes 5 minutes. Further details can be found here: http://www.carltondublinairport.com/en/airport-shuttle-bus/

From Dublin city centre to the airport

The 747 bus goes from Heuston Station to the airport via the city centre and is more or less direct. The journey takes approx 20 minutes. The price is €6 one way and €10 return. https://www.dublinbus.ie/Your-Journey1/Timetables/All-Timetables/74711/

The 16 bus goes from Ballinteer to the airport but takes a lot longer than the 747 as it stops often. It is marginally cheaper than the 747, though. http://www.dublinbus.ie/Your-Journey1/Timetables/All-Timetables/16-2/

The Aircoach goes from the city centre to the airport T1 and T2 direct. The price is €6 one way and €10 return.

Who can come?

The VATeir fly-in is for everyone: whether you are a controller or a pilot there will be something for you!

Controllers

Bring your scopes! Everyone will be given a desk with WiFi access and power connections. We will set up a virtual control centre with adjacent ATC positions sitting next to each other for verbal coordination.

Pilots

Bring your simulators! There is WiFi and several power outlets to enable computers to be connected to the VATSIM network. What better way to fly than to be sitting across the room from the people who are controlling you?!

Members of the public/Non-VATSIM members

The VATeir fly-in is for everyone: whether you are a controller or a pilot, or even if you’re just interested in aviation and would like a different perspective on the final approaches to 28 and 34, there will be something for you!

How much?

Members of the public are admitted completely free of charge. Attendance for VATeir members and VATSIM-registered pilots who choose to bring their flight simulators is €25.

Attendees can purchase their tickets in advance at this link.

VATeir members: guaranteeing the event

As the initial cost of the room is footed by the director out of their own personal money and given that last year’s event lost this person money, we kindly ask VATeir members to purchase their tickets before the 1st of August. If there is insufficient interest expressed by the membership by this date, we will have to cancel the fly-in. In this event, everyone who had paid for tickets will receive a full refund.
