VICE & VERSES: NEO-SOUL BRIGADE
Tue 19 April 2016, 20:00 – 23:00 IST
VICE & VERSES: NEO-SOUL BRIGADE is a celebration of storytelling and music like none other in Ireland. With a focus on spoken word artists who collaborate with musicians -- poets at their most experimental -- and beautiful, lyrically-focused music with a jazzy, hip-hop, neo-soul essence, prepare to have your mind and soul dipped in molasses.
The night is inspired by the Nuyorican Poets Café in New York City, a legendary Lower East Side venue where many African-African and Puerto Rican spoken word artists elevated the artform to new heights, and where the likes of Saul Williams and Aja Monet launched their careers. Celebrate black American forms of expression met with cultures around the world.
Featuring Clara Rose Thornton and Vice & Verses, with two international feature acts, and a poetry/comedy open mic with Vice & Verses improvising behind each act. Top-drawer raffles, giveaways, unique multicultural craic. Your host is two-time Leinster Poetry Slam Champion Clara Rose Thornton: Chicago-born, New-York-simmered, Dublin-dwelling.
TUESDAY 19 APRIL:

Around the age of 14, Siyo made a conscious decision to embark on a music career. The likes of Snoop Dogg's early repertoire, and reggae greats such as Denis Brown and Jacob Miller, were the penultimate factor in choosing to devote his life to his art. He teamed up with one of Ireland's hottest producers, Alan Newman, forming bonds with the likes of Terawrizt and Collie in the Dublin hip-hop scene. The subject matter of Siyo's writing largely involves social issues and everyday life, with glimmers of hope and resolution intertwined.
Siyo has performed at Electric Picnic and features in the groundbreaking Boss Level video series. He's played support to Souls of Mischief (US), Icon the Mic King (US), and Genesis Elijah (UK) with an Akil of Jurassic 5 collaboration under his belt. He's currently working on a full-length with producer Newman (Funzo, Rapthor), bound to become a cult classic of Ireland's exploding hip-hop scene.
Fresh from a European tour including England, Croatia, Bosnia, and Denmark, Clara Rose Thornton, current Leinster Slam Champion, will drag your mind through honey with her neo-soul creation, Vice & Verses. The band, composed of Dublin heavy-hitters Giovanni Agostini (Venezuela) on bass and Enda Roche (Ireland) on guitar, carries you around the world and back with their lush take on neo-soul and spoken word.
All for a fiver, in the velvet-draped environs of The Liquor Rooms, a cross between a 1920s American speakeasy and an old-world European home.
