Description

Wasted

Waste is a human construction, it simply does not exist in nature. Look around you, at your hands, at the device you are using to read this text, at the material things in the room you are in. You and the things around you are in the process of becoming something else.

We have gathered together a group of people who intervene in this process, they look at things that are currently being ‘Wasted’ and are looking to develop systems to create more circular, sustainable and ethical ways of behaving. We want to start a conversation where the equation is waste = resource. this is a tiny step towards that.

Our speakers will include

Eleanor Harrington will be sharing the story of Bubble & Squeak. The kids run social enterprise tackling food waste. A grassroots community initiative set up in 2017 based in East Acton and run on kid power!

Katie May Boyd of London based start up Circular Design Studios will talk about their revolutionary process that recycles EPS (expanded polystyrene) waste and their plans to offer recycling of this material for the first time in the UK, massively decreasing the amount being sent to landfill.

Blast Studio will present their 'Lovely Trash' project where they collect used coffee cups from local cafes to use as feedstock for their mycelium based objects and furniture.

Thea Peterson will present Re:Source a business to business waste app. RE:Source is a tool that connects businesses that produce waste, such as coffee grounds or used tires, with other businesses that can turn those materials into new products, like biofuels, bioplastics or handbags. RE:Source also serves as a clearinghouse of ideas and information for entrepreneurs who want to want to build businesses that reuse the (free!) waste materials other companies need to get rid of. RE:Source seeks to improve the environment by improving the bottom line, and bringing more companies into the circular economy

This will be followed by a panel discussion and Q and A session. The audience is encouraged to bring their questions and their ideas.

This talk will appeal to designers, marketeers and communicators working in fashion, textiles, materials, manufacturing and architecture and anyone interested .
