Event description
Recently a number of cities in Europe and America have followed the lead of Amsterdam in seeking to implement this vision at city level.

About this event

The Implementaiton of the Doughnut Economics Model in Amsterdam will be presented on Tuesday 18th May by Jennifer Drouin, Coordinator of the Amsterdam Doughnut Coalition. The title will be Implementing the Doughnut Economics Approach in Amsterdam.

The April and May talks in the Greening Our City series will take a broader view of “greening” than previous talks. Their focus will be on what is called “Doughnut Economics”, which may offer a useful approach to implementing the UN Sustainable Development Goals at city level.

For those unfamiliar with the approach, the word Doughnut may seem odd, but it is really just an image to help us think about how communities can pursue both sustainability and social justice. Kate Raworth, the originator of the image, describes it as “… a pair of concentric rings. Below the inner ring – the social foundation – lie critical human deprivations such as hunger and illiteracy. Beyond the outer ring – the ecological ceiling – lies critical planetary degradation such as climate change and biodiversity loss”. Between the rings is the safe and just space we must aim for, where we can meet the needs of all within the means of the planet. (Kate Raworth, Doughnut Economics: Seven Ways to Think Like a 21st -Century Economist. London: Random House, 2017)

Jennifer Drouin believes in the power of connecting people and building communities for change. Bringing the do-ers, creators, the people that don't wait for others to act, together and telling shared stories are crucial in finding solutions for the biggest problems of today. Jennifer's passion for enhancing the relationship between nature and people has translated into my work as a community manager at several impact networks. Over the years she has applied her skills and knowledge of community building, network forming, communication and movement in organisations, cities and businesses by creating and setting up online and offline networks for meaningful impact.

As the community manager of the Amsterdam Doughnut Coalition, she has made it her mission to take the people of the region of Amsterdam on a journey to become a socially just and environmentally safe community within the boundaries of our planet.
